During the divorce, Jorji, Kerry, Pam, Amy, and I found a wonderful little place to live. Actually, my mother found it and we fell in love with it. I didn't have a car at that time, so our home needed to be close to Foothill Community College where I worked and all their schools, and it was! It was in a lovely neighborhood in Los Altos Hills and it was even close to Mom and Dad. It was a former hen house, converted into a home with 5 front doors on a beautiful estate. The girls loved it, their friends loved it, and I loved it! We needed to organize our lives and make some rules and such, so I doled out the jobs and put Jorji in charge of her sisters. BIG MISTAKE! They started to resent her and I was trying to do just the opposite, to foster love between them and bring them closer to each other in those difficult times, Once, she came to talk to me and begged me not to make her the boss. Then she said with big tears in her eyes, "Do you think they will ever love me again?" I melted and made some pretty quick changes in my plan.
Jorji liked to lie out in the sun, as did her sisters, and Jorji liked raisins; but Jorji had a special talent of putting a raisin in her mouth and peeling it with her teeth - no fingers! So this turned into a favorite thing to do - lying in the sun, reading, and peeling raisins with her teeth. One problem! We had a resident chicken named Henrietta who belonged to our landlords next door, and she liked raisins too! So she would steal Jorji's raisins and ruin the whole activity. I really don't know how the whole thing turned out. Can you make friends with a chicken? If so, I'm sure she did!
After Jorji finished up her time at Rick's College, she came home, but couldn't bring all her stuff with her; so later she and I decided to take a road trip to pick up everything and bring it home. We were both concerned about becoming drowsy while we drove, so she suggested that we stop and buy some Wheat Thins for munchies to keep us awake, which we did, but I didn't know she liked them so much! When it was her turn to drive, she ate every one, and I didn't have anything to keep me awake, so we stopped and bought some NO DOZE! (that should do it) Not being used to caffeine, it really slammed us; and we didn't sleep right for 3 days! But, what a fun trip we had!
Back in February of 1955, it was an extremely unhappy time for me. We had bought a lovely pram to take Jorji (Colleen then) on walks in. Our long, long walks became the most wonderful time for me - I would tell her all my problems and she would just smile at me and giggle & laugh. Oh, how I loved my Jorji!
